About the author

Giacinto Achilli (1803–c. 1860) was an Italian theologian and religious reformer whose life was marked by dramatic transformations and controversy. Initially a Dominican friar, Achilli gained prominence for his outspoken criticism of the Roman Catholic Church. His dissenting views and call for reform led to his excommunication, after which he became a Protestant preacher and advocate for religious freedom.

Achilli's most notable work, "Dealings with the Inquisition: Or, Papal Rome, Her Priests, and Her Jesuits", offers a compelling critique of the Catholic Church's practices and the Inquisition. His writing is a vivid account of his personal experiences and his vision for a more open and reformed religious practice.

Despite facing imprisonment and significant opposition, Achilli’s dedication to his beliefs and his eloquence as a writer and speaker earned him support from various Protestant communities. His life story remains a testament to the struggles and triumphs of religious reformers in the 19th century.
